The Citrus Memorial Heart Center has been growing steadily since its inception in January of 2004. Under the leadership of the Director, the many fine cardiovascular departmental managers, specialized nursing and dedicated services staff, quality care and expertise are provided for the citizens of Citrus and the surrounding counties.
Each of the areas of expertise listed below provides a wide array of world-class services to improve the heart of our community.

The cardiac catheterization laboratory at Citrus Memorial features two high-tech catheterization suites with superior digital cardiac imaging. We diagnose and treat a variety of cardiac diseases, including coronary artery disease and cardiac dysrhythmias. We perform a wide range of procedures including diagnostic and interventional procedures (balloon angioplasty, stents) for the heart, carotid arteries, kidneys, and upper/lower extremities. We also perform pacemaker and AICD (Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) insertions and generator changes. Our dedicated staff is on call 24 hours every day of the year, and will report to the hospital within 30 minutes of notification if there is an emergency.
Our Cardiovascular Operating Room is comprised of some of the most knowledgeable cardiovascular physicians and staff, including cardiothoracic surgeons, physician assistants, surgical and anesthesia technologists, anesthesiologists, certified cardiac perfusionists and registered nurses. We also perform cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgeries.
After open-heart surgery, patients are taken to our Cardiovascular Recovery Room. Patients are closely observed, monitored and cared for by our critical care nurses for the first 24 hours post-surgery. This unit is fully staffed by critical care RN's. The six-bed CV Recovery Room has an Isolation Room, thus allowing services to include heart surgery on a greater number of patients. Further care and education are then provided in private rooms within our Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit.
Our Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit is designed to closely monitor patients in need of telemetry (continuous heart monitoring) after a cardiac catheterization, cardiac surgery procedure or heart attack. Our CVPCU is staffed by RN's as well as many other support staff. The nurses on this unit provide cardiac-focused care and teaching during our patients' stay. As they heal from open-heart surgery, we work on their progress so they can return home or go to a rehabilitation facility. A key aspect of our patients' recovery is for them to participate in the outpatient Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program.
Welcome to Citrus Memorial Health System’s Heart Center. My name is Roxanne Maldunas, Heart Center Educator. Our goal is to provide the pre-operative education necessary to fully prepare our patients for surgery with Ocala Heart at Citrus Memorial. I start the procedure by meeting with all out-patients on their pre-admission day for approximately two hours and explain what is required before surgery, what to expect in our pre-op holding area and in the operating room. A significant amount of time is spent describing post surgery recovery in our CV Recovery Room and CV Progressive Care Unit, through and including after discharge from the hospital. Our hope is to facilitate optimal patient outcomes and reduce pre-operative anxiety. During pre-admission all necessary testing is completed (blood work, EKG, x-rays, etc.) in order to promote patient safety and avoid unnecessary delays. In addition, I prepare our surgical patient in the pre-op holding area on their day of surgery, maintaining a continuum of care.
